As of Date Camera types and models - 2010.

The best of line are DSLRs which give you the highest quality pictures but are very pricey.
Here some of good DSLRs are
Canon EOS Rebel T2i.
Recently launched Nikon D3100
are good you can also look at lumix G range if you decide to go for DSLRs.
The next range are super zooms which are kind of DSLR lookalikes, These provide you with good value for money.
Produces decent quality pictures. Gives you lot of flexibility in interms of creativity and manual controls. Normally provides a very good zoom lens. I am personally fell in love with these kind. Though i use DSLRs, I carry one of these along with as these come handy.

Recently launched Canon SX30 is currently in my to buy list :-) because of the excellent feature list but waiting to see some reviews. Panasonic FZ 100 is very good as well.

Though there are many available here,
My personal choices are,
Canon SX30, Lumix FZ100, Canon SX 20 , Nikon P100.,Lumix FZ35 You may see the a very good review in the dpreview site.

Next a easier to use compacts.
here are plenty here in this group. The list is kind very big and you can choose anything that looks good and fits your pocket.

Few examples are Canon G12, Nikon S8000, Canon Ixus range Lumix ZS7 are good as well. There are few good sony which are very user friendly , look good and produces good pictures.
